Granted, we don’t know when Kass walked up, though I suppose the less Kass heard the worse it would be, considering the further back it goes the more actual context to “Kassie’s not a man anymore” is given: they are talking entirely about the physical changes.

Not being thought of as a man is the LAST thing Kass needs.
That’s like saying “After my friend got paralyzed things just aren’t the same. I think I need to stop considering them as a normal, fully functional, person, and instead focus on the fact that they are changed.”
None of what happened to him was his choice, and while she is not abandoning him physically, she is abandoning him emotionally.

It is suddenly occurring to me that Kass may have just assumed she was off limits, on the simple basis that there was a power differential, and still is. To be honest, if that’s the case, that’s very professional and ethical of him.
Wizh ears like ours, it is mostly an artistic choice to have Kass listening just out of sight. Kass could have heard from two rooms away, really. Is one of de zhings Kass has not written about, de actual advantages of being a Yinglet.
As Kassen heard cold lamentations—
hid round corner—from his hurt old friend,
what pain felt he? Perhaps befuddlement:
what love was this, now lost, unspoken
in past to him? Or perhaps now
another brick burst from the dam
holding together his health of mind,
a worsening of wounds long held.

So I wonder how intensely Kass is going to react, considering this is a thought they they have contemplated, but not something they have heard a friend say out loud…

First of all: Lopin handled Isher’s struggle fairly well! Isher’s the one who (unintentionally) phrased the resultant emotional processing in a way that will deal Kass psychic damage.
How much will depend on how much context Kass got. Looking back a couple comics, I’m pretty sure Lopin entered through the same door Kassen is currently standing by. I doubt Lopin would have asked this or continued in this manner if he knew Kass was within earshot, so Kass didn’t hear all of it.
Oof. Lopin has pretty good people skills, but I’m not sure he’ll be able to fix this one, especially since Kass might not let him try. So, taking bets: Are Lopin and Isher going to find out Kass overheard this, and if so, when?
