The Matriarch is the decider of an enclave’s “soul,” in more ways than one. As the foremost authority on who breeds with whom, she will decide what the population’s genetic makeup will be, thus influencing the makeup of the enclave as a whole.

Al instead of all?
Interesting how the genetics work. Instead of all the DNA remaining in a nucleus of the male gamete, it is allowed to mix and swap parts of its genes with other strands. Then I guess some hormone in the female causes the new haploid strands to reform on outer coat from the soup of genetic material to fertilize an egg.
These little guys are also monotremes like since they have mammaries and lay eggs.
